Metec Powder Metal AB, Sweden, is establishing itself as the leader in full density parts from gas atomized powders. Through High Velocity Restrike, HVR, components produced from water atomized powders also show improved properties compared to today’s standard production.

By using Scanpac® gas atomized powder parts in stainless steels or alloyed carbon steels can be made to 100% density. High velocity compaction (HVC) and high velocity restrike (HVR) enables the production of higher performance components also from water atomized powder when compared with today’s production.

Two important and proven objectives developed by Metec are demonstrated in the following feature.

000865Objective 1:

Powder metal stainless steel parts for gauging instruments with demands of welding properties and tensile strength as taken from solid, rolled bars.

Through the Metec Multi Step, MMS, full density components with similar properties to wrought material can be achieved from agglomerated gas atomized high purity powder, SCANPAC®.

The SCANPAC® powders, normally in size -150 microns can be supplied in stainless steels, carbon steels, tool steels and high speed steels. Stainless steel 316L was processed through the MMS-process by uniaxial compaction of SCANPAC® 316L powder.

The preforms were compacted to 85% density and sintered where after the parts were restriked by high velocity compaction (HVR) and compared with wrought material in 316L by an independent test laboratory in Sweden.

Examples of the tested properties are shown below.

000866Objective 2:

Powder metal gear wheel blanks with high tensile strength and controllable case hardening depth.

Through the MMS-process conventional water atomized powders can also be processed up to a density of approximately 7.7g/cm3.

The high density brings better performance, better material properties and gives also the possibility to fully control the case hardening depth.
