The China Powder Metallurgy Machinery Association (CMPMA) recently reported statistics for PM parts production for the first half of 2012 which showed that tonnage output had declined by 8.9% over the same period in 2011.

Output for the first half 2012 totalled 78,358 tonnes which was reported as having an industrial output value of Yuan 2,667 million ($426.7 million), a decrease of 5.9% over the corresponding period in 2011.

Output for the second quarter of 2012 totalled 40,047 tonnes, up by 4.4% on the first quarter’s figures.

Exports of PM products increased in the half year period by 6.9% to a value of Yuan 280 million.

The decline in PM production could be attributed to the fact that the number of production enterprises reporting their statistics to CMPMA was reduced to 51 compared in the first half of 2012 compared with 53 which reported in the corresponding period in 2011. However, there have also been mixed results from the Chinese PM industry’s two biggest consumers, automobiles and motor cycles.

In the first half of 2012 China’s vehicle production increased by 4% to 9,529,200 units, but motor cycle production decreased by 11.4% in the period to 11,629,100 units. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) reported similar trends in the January to September 2012 period.

Overall growth in the Chinese economy is projected to be around 8% in 2012 against 9.2% in 2011 and double digit growth in the preceding 5 years.
