A new sophisticated helical gear compaction system from tooling manufacturer Aliver PM Technology, Switzerland, that enables compaction of challenging steep helical gear angles has been installed on the Höganäs PoP Centre’s  800 ton Dorst compaction press.

By targeting high load-carrying transmission gears, Höganäs intends to support customers and OEMs on PM gear application development projects and to prove that PM technology is a cost-effective alternative for manufacturing of both external and internal ring gears.

In 2011, Höganäs ran several compaction campaigns in the PoP Centre. “In our campaigns we have been simulating real-life helical gear compaction conditions with our own as well as customers’ tooling. From that we have learned a lot about the successful interaction between PM materials, tooling and compaction aspects,” stated Eckart Schneider, Marketing Manager PM Components.

“We have been able to study and optimise the compressibility of new powder solutions and our new lubricant concepts that allow challenging helical gear compaction jobs to very high densities. By also using our Hipaloy™ powder mix we managed to prove the concept of compacting a helical gear to a single press and sintered density of >7.4 g/cc”.

Close customer cooperations as well as the expertise and contributions of Aliver PM Technology and Dorst Technologies were very important to the successful outcome of these invaluable development activities. “With this unique knowledge, we hope to be able to better promote PM gear solutions within the industry,” added Schneider.
