Honda Motors, Tokyo, Japan, has begun global production of a new 10-speed automatic transmission system (10AT) at its Honda Precision Parts Georgia (HPPG) facility in Tallapoosa, Georgia, USA. The company has reportedly invested nearly $150 million in two of its USA manufacturing plants for the continued production of the new transmission.

The investment includes $100 million for a new assembly line and production modifications at HPPG and an additional $49 million investment to provide new equipment and increase production capacity at Honda Transmission Mfg. of America, Inc. (HTM), Russells Point, Ohio, USA. This follows Honda’s announcement of an $85 million investment in its Alabama Facility, Honda Manufacturing of Alabama – which manufactures Honda’s Odyssey, Pilot and Ridgeline vehicles and engines – to improve manufacturing flexibility, strengthen logistic efficiency for future models and prepare for the arrival of future technologies.

Developed by Honda R&D, the new 10AT reportedly features a low-friction design for energy-saving and drivability. It will be used first in the upper grades of Honda’s new 2018 Odyssey minivan, to launch Spring 2017, and to additional light-truck and car models in future.

“This new 10-speed automatic transmission represents Honda’s commitment to provide our customers with products of outstanding performance, and we are honoured to be the global lead plant for production of the 10AT,” stated Masahiko Kayama, President of Honda Precision Parts of Georgia. “Manufacturing the new transmission in Georgia is a huge responsibility and a great opportunity for Honda associates to demonstrate their manufacturing capabilities and commitment.”
