The Metal Powder Industry Federation’s Basic Powder Metallurgy Short Course, now in its fifty-fourth year, was held at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel, State College, Pennsylvania, USA, August 13-15, 2018. This year’s event, reported to be the largest to date, provided a complete introduction to Powder Metallurgy, from powder production to component design and standards.

The MPIF also stated that this year there was a broader range of attendees than in 2017. The largest represented industry segment of the over 100 attendees was still engineering (44%); however, quality control and testing, and sales employees made up 10% and 11% of the audience, respectively. Production (15%), other (15% – mostly R&D), and management (5%) rounded out the short course attendees.

The Basic PM Short Course, held every August, is seen as a vital educational tool for the entire industry. Each speaker is an expert in their field and provides invaluable knowledge. Combined, the speakers have an incredible total of over 450 years of relative in-industry experience. The course is specifically designed for those who want to expand their knowledge of PM; enhance their opportunities to advance; and for those who are looking to deepen their understanding in the specialised area of PM.
