Phoenix Scientific Industries Ltd (PSI), Hailsham, East Sussex, UK, has been awarded a contract to supply a HERMIGA 100/10 VI atomisation system to advanced materials supplier Elkem SA, Oslo, Norway. The new atomiser is expected to produce high-quality powder for research activities between Elkem and the Future Materials Norwegian Catapult Centre, a materials development and testing centre which aims to bridge the gap between idea and pilot-scale production.

The HERMIGA 100/10 VI vacuum inert pilot series gas atomiser uses the same close-coupled die technology as PSI’s production-scale systems. With these die designs, the atomisers are said to allow for consistent and reproducible production of high-quality spherical metal powders down to 10 microns median, where rapid solidification rates in the region of 105 to 106 Ksec-1 are possible.

The vacuum’s supply rack system is available to enable processing using various gases, including argon, helium and nitrogen. The melting capacity is 10 kg of steel or equivalent volumes of other alloys.

PSI’s HERMIGA 100/10 VI features a control system that includes a data logging facility and has options for oxygen monitoring, optical pyrometry, mechanical booster vacuum pump upgrades, melt charging/sampling, gas superheating or cooling, particle injection systems and additional transfer hoppers.
