The Plansee Group, headquartered in Reutte, Austria, has reported that since March 2025, it has been able to compensate all as yet unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions generated through its own commercial operations via certified projects. Together with Ceratizit, the company reports that decisive steps have been taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through a number of measures.

Unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions generated by the company’s own commercial operations (Scope 1 and 2), which are predicted to total 78 kilotons of CO2e for the current accounting period 2025/26, have been voluntarily offset through certified projects in the USA and India since March 1, 2025.

Dr Andreas Lackner, Executive Board member of the Plansee Group, shared, “We have already been able to cut our greenhouse gas emissions by more than 20% compared to our reference year of 2020.”

Among the measures already taken to reduce emissions is the procurement of electricity from renewable sources at all major Plansee and Ceratizit facilities around the world, as well as increasing its material recycling rates, of which tungsten accounts for 90%. Further initiatives are aimed at reducing energy use in its factories, installing electrolysers for hydrogen production, upping the use of process heat, and recycling hydrogen.

“We also have ambitious plans for the coming years. We want to continue downsizing our carbon footprint through our own initiatives so we can reduce the impact our production has on the environment step by step,” Lackner said.

Plansee and CERATIZIT will also be placing greater responsibility on their suppliers. “Around 70% of our greenhouse gas emissions are linked to purchased products and services – so we’ll be working hard with our suppliers to identify solutions for avoiding and reducing these emissions,” Lackner added.

The Plansee Group stated that it places strict requirements on the quality of the certificates it uses to compensate for those greenhouse gas emissions that have been unavoidable so far (Scope 1 and 2). As a global manufacturing company, it is working to realise compensation projects close to its larger production sites. These projects include a forest conservation initiative in Pennsylvania, USA, situated in close proximity to the group’s largest US production site in Towanda. The second project is near the Mysore and Bangalore production sites in India, where the production of solar power is being supported. Both projects are planned for the long term and are being monitored by internationally recognised certification bodies (ACR and Verra) based on the highest standards available at present (ICVCM), in addition to conducting internal audits. In Europe, the Plansee Group is in the process of selecting suitable compensation projects.

Each business area of the Plansee Group is pursuing its own goals to reduce its carbon footprint successively. Plansee has set itself the voluntary goal of reducing its Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 90% before the year 2050 (compared to the reference year). Ceratizit has committed itself to achieving this goal by 2040.
