Polestar, an electric performance car company headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, has opened its first production facility, the Polestar Production Centre in Chengdu, China. The company also announced that it has received its World Manufacturing Identifier, which it says officiates the brand as a standalone vehicle OEM.

The new production facility will initially produce the Polestar 1 – a carbon fibre-bodied hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), for the Chinese and global export markets, with the first customer deliveries expected before the end of 2019. China is the world’s largest market for electric vehicles and, Polestar stated, the establishment of its first production centre in this location offers access to this market as well as a skilled electric vehicle manufacturing workforce.

As well as production facilities, the Polestar Production Centre incorporates a customer experience centre, a test track and a glazed atrium providing a panoramic view over the factory floor. It is anticipated that 500 Polestar 1 cars will be produced per year in the new Chengdu facility, with a total of 1,500 planned over a three year production cycle.  Construction of the Polestar 1 in Chengdu will be followed by production of the Polestar 2 in Luqiao, China, in early 2020

Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer of Polestar, stated, “We promised we would have our first production facility built in 2019, we promised cars would be delivered to customers this year, and we promised we would do things differently – once again we are delivering on our promises. This is a hugely proud moment for the whole team at Polestar.”
