Powder-forged con rod

manufactured using Astaloy® steel

powder developed by Höganäs AB

Sinteron Co Ltd, South Korea’s second largest PM part producer, has started manufacturing powder-forged connecting rods based on the chromium alloyed Astaloy® steel powder developed by Höganäs AB, the Swedish powder manufacturer stated in a recent report.

Sinteron, which has been producing powder forged con rods for nearly a decade through technology cooperation with GKN Sinter Metals, developed the new connecting rod in close partnership with Höganäs and car producer Hyundai where the new generation of chromium alloyed PM material is used for the first time. These connecting rods, which went into production in the 4th quarter of 2010, will be used in Hyundai’s newly developed high-performance engines.

Compared to other metals, chromium is a cost-efficient alloy element that is gaining increasing usage in the PM industry, and Höganäs has developed several materials based on a unique production process. The chromium alloyed Astaloy® material is stated to make powder-forging technology even more competitive than competing alternatives. The estimated volume of the connecting rod market is over 150,000 tons annually, and in terms of size, a quarter of this is currently estimated to be produced by powder forging.
