The Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) has announced that its PowderMet2024/AMPM2024 programme will include a four-session forum dedicated to carbides. The co-located events will take place June 16-19 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

Tungsten-carbide (WC) based materials provide unique combinations of hardness, strength, and toughness for a wide variety of wear applications. This forum will provide an overview of WC, its alloy grades, their properties and applications, and their methods of manufacturing.

As part of an overview session, methods of characterising the microstructure and properties of cemented carbides will be discussed along with methods of producing WC grade powder. A WC alloy design session will review the reasons for selecting different alloy grades for specific applications and the latest developments in grades not based on cobalt. Two sessions on manufacturing processes will cover pressing, sintering, Additive Manufacturing, and recycling.

The presentations are as follows:

  • ‘Introduction to W/WC’ by Bernard North, North Technical Management LLC
  • ‘Properties and Measurement Methods for Cemented Carbides’ and ‘Grade Powder Production Methods’ by Thomas Jewett, Global Tungsten & Powders LLC
  • ‘Grade Design of Cemented Carbide, Tungsten Carbide with Binders; and the Effect of Minor Additive Additions’ by Robert Scott, HC Starck Tungsten
  • ‘Alternative WC Binder Materials’ by Johannes Pöeschke, IKTS — Dresden
  • ‘Corrosion Resistant Carbide Grades’ by Madison Rase, Hyperion Materials & Technologies
  • ‘Additive Manufacturing I: Overview Examining the Different Processes and Powders’ and ‘Additive Manufacturing II: Process Capabilities and Market Opportunities/Threats’ by Kennametal representatives including Zhuqing Wang
  • ‘Fused Filament Fabrication of Hardmetals’ by Animesh Bose, Optimus Alloy
  • ‘Consolidation of RTP Powder’ and ‘Sintering Methods and Processing for Cemented Carbodes’ by Neal Myers, Kennametal
  • ‘Recycling of Hardmaterials’ by Amy Herron, Tungco
