Renault, Europe’s third largest car producer, has started production of it’s no-frills Dacia cars at its €1 billion plant in the Moroccan port city of Tangiers. The Tangier factory is Renault’s second in Morocco, after a 50-year old plant in Casablanca, and will have a capacity to produce as many as 400,000 units a year.

factory

The factory will have two assembly lines to produce the Dacia Lodgy and Dokker minivans, mostly for export to start. The first line has an annual capacity of 170,000 vehicles and the second line is expected to start in 2013.

The French company and its Japanese partner Nissan see potential for Africa to mirror the rapidly increasing demand for vehicles in Latin America over the next decade, where car sales are forecast to rise to 5.75 million units in 2012, double the level of 2005.

Sales on the whole of the African continent will be around 1 million vehicles in 2012 with more than half this total coming from South Africa. Renault has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Algerian Government to build a factory there.
