Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines powering the Boeing 787 Dreamliners operated by Japan’s largest airline All Nippon Airways (ANA) recently completed more than 4000 flying hours since it went into service with ANA at the end of October 2011.
This means a record 99.9% despatch reliability during the first months of revenue service. “These are the best ever reliability figures for a Rolls-Royce Trent family engine on entering airline service,” said Peter Price, Rolls-Royce, Director Engineering & Technology – Civil Aerospace.
“This achievement underlines the maturity we sought to build into the Trent 1000’s operational performance right from the start of the programme and which was proven in the testing and certification programme we completed last year.”
The Trent 1000 powered the Boeing 787 Dreamliner’s first flight was in December 2009 and has entered service with ANA and Air New Zealand. The engine, the quietest and most efficient available on the 787 Dreamliner, has been selected in eight of the last nine 787 Dreamliner engine decisions and now has a total of 24 customers, states Rolls-Royce.
The Trent 1000 engine uses HIPed + isothermally forged RR1000 powder metallurgy (PM) superalloys developed by Rolls-Royce in the last two stages of the HP compressor drum and the HP turbine discs providing benefits in cycle operating temperature and component life.
The RR1000 PM superalloys are also scheduled to be used in the Trent XWB engines which will power the new wide-bodied Airbus A350 from 2013.
