SRP Electronic has invested Rs 5 crore (approx. US $812,000) in the new facility, which has installed capacity of 10 tonnes per month. The company is utilising a solvent extraction process for extracting tungsten from scrap, a first in India states the report.

S R Pophale, Chairman, SRP Electronica stated, “The new business of tungsten manufacturing was a logical and much required backward integration for us as we have been present in the manufacturing of tungsten carbide products for the last 20 years.”

“The tungsten powder manufactured here shall act as a basic raw material for our Group Company, Electronica Tough Carb Limited. Defence and other tungsten product manufacturers will also be clients of this new business,” added Pophale.

There is a growing requirement for tungsten products in the Indian market in industrial applications and also defence applications, where it has been identified as a strategic material for defence needs. The Indian market size of tungsten metal powder is 150 tonnes per month, states the report. Currently most of the tungsten is imported from China.
