Toyota Motor Co of Japan and BMW, Germany, are to deepen their green car development tie up, signed last December, with BMW supplying Toyota with small-displacement clean-diesel engines for use in vehicles sold in Europe starting in 2014. In return Toyota would work with BMW to produce the next generation batteries for hybrid vehicles.

Toyota is said to be looking for ways of achieving higher volumes for its hybrid vehicles and hence lower production costs. The company has already signed hybrid development or supply deals with Mazda Motor, Subaru, and Ford Motor Company.

Toyota will also supply BMW with hydrogen fuel cell technologies, the first time that the Japanese car producer has supplied its fuel cell technology to a rival car producer. Toyota plans to introduce a new fuel cell vehicle in 2015.
